Partnership opportunity for 'Localism 2.0: Empowering the Civic State'

ResPublica today announce a new research project commencing January 2013. The wide-reaching programme of research will engage practically with partners in local government and other community intermediaries in order to map out the need for further reforms to achieve deeper, more radical forms of localism.

The Localism agenda presents an unprecedented opportunity for local authorities to develop radical approaches to service delivery and economic renewal. Local government has a key role to play in driving forward these changes and helping communities face up to future economic, democratic and social challenges.

The Localism Act and the Local Government Finance Act both grant additional legal and finance powers, and the General Power of Competence is a step towards granting greater independence for local government. But do they go far enough in allowing local government to spearhead a radical localism? What more can be done to promote the role of local authorities as ‘civic brokers’ and social investors in their communities?
