Phillip Blond speaks to Bloomberg TV about the General Election

25th March 2015

  • ResPublica

Our Director, Phillip Blond, spoke to Francine Lacqua and Guy Johnson on Bloomberg Politics about the Labour and Conservative parties’ electoral campaign strategies.

He said that David Cameron’s announcement that he would not be standing for a third time was an ‘error’ which could prove ‘extraordinarily destabilising’ for his party, and argued that the Prime Minister will be a lame duck for the second half of a future administration. He also questioned how he would pass the leadership onto a successor in the runup to the 2020 General Election.

Phillip suggested that Labour’s failure to capitalise on the Prime Minister’s comments was another missed open goal and that it offered the opportunity to turn the Tories’ argument of ‘Conservative competence versus Labour chaos’ on its head.

Discussing the campaign more broadly, Phillip said that it would not become exciting until the parties began fighting majority politics again, arguing that both were playing to their core voters but with little success. No party has a big idea for the future of the country, which is stopping either party from gathering more than a third of votes.
