As UK manufacturing’s competitiveness has declined – partly due to a strengthening pound – regional imbalances have grown\, productivity has sagged and economic growth has been sluggish. \nBut the issues facing our manufacturing industries have been neglected.  A quick survey of headline figures reveals the problem we face. The national export balance is continuing to weaken. The balance of firms reporting improvements in export sales remains below its pre-recession peak. And the pound is at a seven year high against the euro\, the currency of our largest export destination. The role of sterling in the steel industry’s woes means this is now a question of urgent national concern. \nSterling’s strength has been caused in part by inflows of foreign capital that finance our current account deficit but often do not increase the productive capacity of the economy. The long-term economic security and prosperity of all regions of the United Kingdom depends on a new\, more holistic approach to economic and industrial policy that addresses this issue. \nWe delighted to welcome a range of speakers to discuss these issues at this event\, which will coincide with the launch of our latest paper\, Make or Break: How sterling can drive Britain’s manufacturing renaissance. SUMMARY:A Community Right to Beauty
DESCRIPTION:ResPublica is launching its latest report: A Community Right to Beauty: Giving communities the power to shape\, enhance and create beautiful places\, buildings and spaces. Arguing for the restoration and democratisation beauty in public policy\, this seminal publication recommends the extension of community influence in the planning process to ensure beautiful localities are accessible to all. \nBased on findings from a public poll conducted by leading pollsters Ipsos Mori\, the report explores the public’s attitudes towards beauty and perceived local access to beautiful spaces. \nBeauty plays a central role in enabling people and communities to flourish. Our report highlights the health\, economic\, social and civic benefits of living near beautiful surroundings\, and reasserts the importance of its intrinsic value. \nOur report argues for a ‘community right to beauty’ to be introduced via primary legislation\, the details of which will be revealed in the report. The policy recommendations set out a range of new powers and incentives to support the democratic discernment of what makes a neighbourhood beautiful\, and communities’ ability to independently create\, shape and improve their locale. \nAfter opening remarks by ResPublica’s Head of Policy Programmes\, Caroline Julian\, the event will feature a panel discussion\, with the following confirmed speakers: \n\nRt Hon Nick Herbert MP\, former Conservative Minister\nLoyd Grossman\, Chairman of the Heritage Alliance\nDame Fiona Reynolds\, former Chair of the National Trust.\nSir Terry Farrell\, Chair of the Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment\nPhillip Blond\, Director\, ResPublica\n\nJoining us will be a diverse range of senior representatives from across national and local government\, civil society\, the media and leading charities and businesses.. SUMMARY:In Professions We Trust
DESCRIPTION:ResPublica invites to you the launch of its latest report: In Professions We Trust: Fostering virtuous practitioners in teaching\, law and medicine. This report will argue that the legal\, medical\, and teaching professions provide a vital link between public service and the wider common good. Yet this understanding of civic purpose is in crisis\, and the professions too often have come to be seen as self-serving interest groups. The conception of professionalism founded on the performance of duties has been eroded\, with transactionality\, narrowing specialisation\, and the meeting of imposed targets coming to characterise practice. The resultant loss of trust has been detrimental to both practitioners and users of services. \nWe need to acknowledge the obligation of practitioners to serve the common good in order to return law\, medicine\, and teaching to their proper status as vocations. This entails calling practitioners to reconsider their sense of professional purpose\, and allowing the rebuilding of relationships\, in which the doctor\, teacher\, and lawyer knows and seeks to serve all the needs of their patient\, student\, or client. Through this restoration of trust\, it will be possible to return responsibility to members of the professions. \nThis report reasserts virtue as the hallmark of the professions and their practitioners. The continuous nature of the practice of virtue at every stage of professional life must be grasped\, embedding a consideration of practical wisdom and reflective practice in both training and professional life. In this way\, the professions will once again fulfil their calling as vocations that serve the good of all. \nThe event will feature remarks from Dr Dan Poulter\, Conservative MP\, and a  senior Labour counterpart followed by a panel session including \n\nPatrick Roach\, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT\nFrancis Gilbert\, Teacher and author\nLord Phillips of Sudbury\, former member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Aid\nPhillip Blond\, Director of ResPublica\n\nThe launch will be a private event\, to which we will be inviting high level representatives from the medical\, teaching and legal professions\, Parliament\, and the media. At one end\, there is an ever growing group who cannot access social housing and are locked out of home ownership\, and at the other\, for those in housing\, the combination of a rise in property prices\, constrained mortgage availability and a slow recovery from the recession has drastically changed the market. Furthermore\, the separation between homeowners and private renters is a rising source of tension\, entrenching wealth inequality and feeding an intergenerational divide. \nAs a basic social need\, our citizens should have access to affordable and high quality housing in an attractive neighbourhood that has the necessary infrastructure for them to flourish. A steady home in a well-designed community can have an enormous impact on individual and family life\, providing the necessary stability for a job\, a good base for education as well as delivering essential health\, well-being and wider community benefits.
