SUMMARY:Catholic social teaching\, public policy and economics – Pope Benedict\, Pope Francis and beyondCatholic social teaching\, public policy and economics – Pope Benedict\, Pope Francis and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Catholic social teaching seeks to provide guidance on\, amongst other things\, the appropriate role of the state in economic life. Pope Benedict XVI’s social encyclical\, Caritas in veritate\, prompted an important discussion after the financial crash about the role of ethics in business. This discussion united many who disagreed on a range of other issues. Since his election\, Pope Francis has made a number of controversial statements about market economies\, globalisation and inequality which have an important influence on political and economic debate. This panel discussion draws together a number of experts in the field to discuss their views on recent trends in and future directions of Catholic social teaching and its relationship to public policy and business life. After an introduction from the panellists\, there will be plenty of time for open discussion. \nPanellists:\nEdward Hadas\, Economics Editor at Reuters Breakingviews and author of Human Goods\, Economic Evils: A Moral Approach to the Dismal Science; \nPhilip Booth\, IEA Editorial and Programme Director\, editor and co-author of Catholic Social Teaching and the Market Economy which has just been republished in an expanded second edition\, and professor of insurance and risk management at Cass Business School\, City University\, London; \nFrancis Davis\, former director of the Las Casas Centre\, Blackfriars Hall\, University of Oxford\, editor of Catholic Social Conscience –Reflection And Action\, lead author of Moral But No Compass – Church\, Government And The Future of Welfare and former policy advisor to the Secretary of State for Communities And Local Government; \nKishore Jayabalan\, Director of Istituto Acton and former Lead Policy Analyst to the Holy See at the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace; and \nPhillip Blond\, Director of Respublica and former senior lecturer in theology and philosophy at the Universities of Exeter and Cumbria. \nChaired by Edmund Adamus\, Director for Marriage and Family Life\, Diocese of Westminster and Founder\, St John Southworth Fund. \nPlease note\, places at this event are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. We will have a waiting list in operation so if you are no longer able to attend\, please let us know. \nTo buy or download the second edition of Catholic Social Teaching and the Market Economy\, click here. \nThere will be an opportunity for football fans to watch the England World Cup Game after the event. \nRSVP: via email or on 0207 799 8900.

SUMMARY:Report Launch: 'Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service'
DESCRIPTION:“Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service”. Please allow sufficient time to pass through security. \nResPublica is launching its latest report: ‘Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service’. Supported by Benenden Health\, this ResPublica report sets out a new model of mutual health insurance to complement the NHS. \nIn light of the inevitable shift in emphasis from acute to chronic health services\, the NHS as it currently exists is not fit for purpose. A combination of an ageing population; a steady increase in the cost of drugs and surgery; a surge in those suffering from long term conditions; and decreasing health budgets\, all mean that the NHS as it currently stands is simply unsustainable and unable to match current demands let alone future burdens. \nUnder current arrangements\, the NHS in England will see a funding shortfall of £53 billion by 2021/22 and it is predicated that long term conditions alone will bankrupt the health system before the end of the decade. \nThe NHS of the future will need to move from a system that deals with the siloed needs of patients\, to a holistic form of care that caters for the needs of the patient in the round. We need a new system of healthcare that delivers personalised\, holistic care in a cost-effective manner. \nIn ‘Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service‘\, ResPublica proposes a model for mutual health insurance that would operate within the NHS and commissioned by CCGs. Acting as the purchasing organisations for discretionary health insurance policies taken out for patients\, these mutual organisations can not only reduce the financial burden on the NHS\, but deliver the holistic and integrated care needed by those with long-term conditions. \nThe event will include a panel discussion along with question and answer session. Members of the panel include: \n\nRt Hon Stephen Dorrell MP\, Chair\, Health Select Committee\nBarbara Keeley MP\, Health Select Committee\nMarc Bell\, Chief Executive\, Benenden Health\nProfessor Karol Sikora\, Medical Director of CancerPartnersUK\nMo Girach\, Chief Executive\, Partnership of East London Co-Operatives (PELC)\n\nThe launch will be a private event\, to which we will be inviting high level representatives from across industry\, the mutual sector\, Parliament and the media. \nFor more information about how to attend this event\, please contact Felicia Bender by email at felicia.bender@respublica.org.uk.

SUMMARY:The Banking Gap: How payday lenders can support and mainstream the financially excluded
DESCRIPTION:This is a private roundtable discussion in support of a ResPublica research project. \nIn light of current proposals for regulation from the Chancellor\, the Department for Business\, Innovation and Skills\, as well as from the Financial Conduct Authority\, ResPublica will be conducting an in-depth programme of research to explore the ‘banking gap’ and propose new mechanisms to address the issue. \nThroughout the research\, we will examine various ways in which we could establish a new culture of lending\, and make recommendations on how we can move to a system that rewards responsible borrowers and bridges the current gap in financial service provision. It is the key aim of this research project to establish how a responsive regulatory system\, working in collaboration with the sector\, could promote the short-term lenders we need and support the delivery of holistic financial solutions.

SUMMARY:How can the financial sector better serve the needs of society?
DESCRIPTION:Launch of ResPublica’s Latest Report: “Markets for the Many: How civic finance can open up markets and widen access”. Launched with opening remarks by Cathy Jamieson MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury. \nResPublica is launching its latest report: ‘Markets for the Many: How civic finance could open up markets and widen access’. Supported by the Building Societies Association\, Nationwide\, Yorkshire Building Society\, the Association of Financial Mutuals\, Unity Trust Bank and the CDFA\, this Green Paper sets out how the current financial reform agenda needs go beyond assessing mere financial stability\, as contained in the Banking Reform Act\, and explores the overall ability of the sector to serve customers\, help communities and support small businesses. \nIn order to better serve the needs of society\, the report recommends that the Government pursue policies that permit building societies to lend more to SMEs; allow financial mutuals to raise extra capital to increase competition within the sector; and introduce a Community Reinvestment Act in the next Parliament to maximise lending to our deprived communities. \nThe paper serves to widen the debate around financial reform and to highlight how regulators need\, in order to restore trust and confidence in the sector\, to go beyond the Banking Reform Act and encourage the financial sector to adopt its civic duty within society. \nThe event will commence with a 10-minute keynote speech\, delivered by Cathy Jamieson MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury\, followed by a panel discussion before opening up the discussion to delegates. Members of the panel include: \n\nDavid Llewellyn\, Professor of Money & Banking at Loughborough University\nRobin Fieth\, Chief Executive\, Building Societies Association\nMartin Shaw\, Chief Executive\, Association of Financial Mutuals\nBen Hughes\, Chief Executive\, Community Development Finance Association\nPeter Kelly\, Business Development and Marketing Director\, Unity Trust Bank\nJeff Prestridge\, Personal Finance Editor\, Mail on Sunday\n\nThe launch will be a private event\, to which we will be inviting high level representatives from across industry\, the charitable sector\, Parliament and the media.

SUMMARY:ResPublica's Holistic Mission report scheduled for debate in the House of Lords
DESCRIPTION:ResPublica is pleased to announce that its recent report\, Holistic Mission: Social action and the Church of England\, has been scheduled for debate in the House of Lords at 3pm on 21st November 2013. \nThe motion “to move that this House takes note of the July 2013 report of ResPublica ‘Holistic Mission: Social Action and the Church of England’” was proposed by the Bishop of Leicester\, Lord Tim Stevens\, and emerged in a ballot recently. \nThe ResPublica report\, which was launched with the Archbishop of Canterbury\, Lord Justin Welby\, and the Minister for Civil Society\, Nick Hurd MP\, argues that the Church must become an enabling institution focussed on holistic\, interpersonal and local social action. The report demonstrates that the Church has a truly unique place in English society\, and is the key to unlocking a revolution in both voluntary and statutory public service provision. The report argues that we need new institutions for the 21st century\, and that the Church is well-placed to become one. \nHolistic Mission can be downloaded for free here and purchased from our shop via this link. The keynote speeches by ResPublica Director\, Phillip Blond\, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Minister for Civil Society\, plus the subsequent panel discussion with the Bishop of Leicester and Shadow Employment Minister\, Stephen Timms MP\, can be viewed here. \nFor further information regarding ResPublica’s work on faith and the Church\, please contact ResPublica’s Head of Research\, Caroline Julian\, at caroline.julian@respublica.org.uk or on 0207 222 6552.

SUMMARY:The Economy of Errors: Can understanding human nature help protect consumers
DESCRIPTION:The Economy of Errors: Can understanding human nature help protect consumers #EconomyOfErrors. \nFinancial regulation and enforcement can be a costly endeavour for financial institutions and regulators. Using techniques trialled in behavioural economics to ‘nudge’ market players into good behaviour could both save money and make for a more ethos driven financial sector. This public panel session will discuss how such a change in regulation may be brought about. Throughout the session\, interactive behavioural ‘games’ will be utilised to improve the overall delegate experience. \nSpeakers:\n\nRt Hon Greg Clark\, Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nDavid Mowat MP\, Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nTracey McDermott\, Director of Enforcement and Financial Crime\, FCA\nAndrew Lilico\, Director of European Economics\n\nCo-hosted with Financial Conduct Authority.

SUMMARY:4000%: Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest?
DESCRIPTION:4000% Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest? \nOn the back of a recent Office for Fair Trading report on payday loans; the short-term lending sector has come under increased criticism and scrutiny. With some payday lenders exhibiting unethical and unscrupulous behaviour\, it is unclear whether payday lending functions as a crucial form of finance for those on low incomes\, or simply a means of locking the poor into a cycle of debt. With the demand for payday loans apparent\, trust needs to be reinjected into the sector with clear regulations\, ethical practices and clear accountability. \nSpeakers:\n\nChris Evans MP\, Member of Parliament for Islwyn\nYvonne Fovargue MP\, Member of Parliament for Makerfiel\nJoanna Elson\, Chief Executive\, Money Advice Trust\nRussell Hamblin-Boone\, Chief Executive\, Consumer Finance Association\nElaine Moore\, Deputy Editor\, FT Money\, Financial Times (Chair)\n\nCo-hosted with Consumer Finance Association.
