DESCRIPTION:THE ISSUE:\nThe North’s major cities have enjoyed an incredible renaissance during the past decade\, and despite the challenging economic environment of recent years\, they continue to make huge progress. \nDespite all the progress made\, the investment won\, and the impressive physical regeneration that has taken place\, there still remains a chasm between prosperity in the North and the South of England. \nThe BBC programme hosted by Evan Davis recently ‘Mind the Gap’ confirmed that London is creating a fifth of Britain’s income and is pulling away from the rest of the country. What can be done to begin to redress the balance? \nTHE EVENT:\nFollowing the success of last year’s inaugural Northern Revolution conference at Media City\, which attracted a huge amount of interest and media coverage\, Downtown is continuing this important debate and discussion. \nWith ‘the age of austerity’ likely to go on for some time\, public finances tight\, and no end in sight to Westminster’s unhealthy obsession with London\, what can Northern cities do to build on the relative success they have enjoyed\, and accelerate transformation and economic growth? \nWould a ‘super city’ of the north be a possible answer? DESCRIPTION:Catholic social teaching seeks to provide guidance on\, amongst other things\, the appropriate role of the state in economic life. Pope Benedict XVI’s social encyclical\, Caritas in veritate\, prompted an important discussion after the financial crash about the role of ethics in business. This discussion united many who disagreed on a range of other issues. Since his election\, Pope Francis has made a number of controversial statements about market economies\, globalisation and inequality which have an important influence on political and economic debate. This panel discussion draws together a number of experts in the field to discuss their views on recent trends in and future directions of Catholic social teaching and its relationship to public policy and business life. Please allow sufficient time to pass through security. \nResPublica is launching its latest report: ‘Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service’. Supported by Benenden Health\, this ResPublica report sets out a new model of mutual health insurance to complement the NHS. \nIn light of the inevitable shift in emphasis from acute to chronic health services\, the NHS as it currently exists is not fit for purpose. A combination of an ageing population; a steady increase in the cost of drugs and surgery; a surge in those suffering from long term conditions; and decreasing health budgets\, all mean that the NHS as it currently stands is simply unsustainable and unable to match current demands let alone future burdens. \nUnder current arrangements\, the NHS in England will see a funding shortfall of £53 billion by 2021/22 and it is predicated that long term conditions alone will bankrupt the health system before the end of the decade. \nThe NHS of the future will need to move from a system that deals with the siloed needs of patients\, to a holistic form of care that caters for the needs of the patient in the round. We need a new system of healthcare that delivers personalised\, holistic care in a cost-effective manner. \nIn ‘Power to the People: The mutual future of our National Health Service‘\, ResPublica proposes a model for mutual health insurance that would operate within the NHS and commissioned by CCGs. Acting as the purchasing organisations for discretionary health insurance policies taken out for patients\, these mutual organisations can not only reduce the financial burden on the NHS\, but deliver the holistic and integrated care needed by those with long-term conditions. \nThe event will include a panel discussion along with question and answer session. DESCRIPTION:This is a private roundtable discussion in support of a ResPublica research project. \nIn light of current proposals for regulation from the Chancellor\, the Department for Business\, Innovation and Skills\, as well as from the Financial Conduct Authority\, ResPublica will be conducting an in-depth programme of research to explore the ‘banking gap’ and propose new mechanisms to address the issue. \nThroughout the research\, we will examine various ways in which we could establish a new culture of lending\, and make recommendations on how we can move to a system that rewards responsible borrowers and bridges the current gap in financial service provision. It is the key aim of this research project to establish how a responsive regulatory system\, working in collaboration with the sector\, could promote the short-term lenders we need and support the delivery of holistic financial solutions.

SUMMARY:How can the financial sector better serve the needs of society?
DESCRIPTION:Launch of ResPublica’s Latest Report: “Markets for the Many: How civic finance can open up markets and widen access”. Launched with opening remarks by Cathy Jamieson MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury. \nResPublica is launching its latest report: ‘Markets for the Many: How civic finance could open up markets and widen access’. Supported by the Building Societies Association\, Nationwide\, Yorkshire Building Society\, the Association of Financial Mutuals\, Unity Trust Bank and the CDFA\, this Green Paper sets out how the current financial reform agenda needs go beyond assessing mere financial stability\, as contained in the Banking Reform Act\, and explores the overall ability of the sector to serve customers\, help communities and support small businesses. \nIn order to better serve the needs of society\, the report recommends that the Government pursue policies that permit building societies to lend more to SMEs; allow financial mutuals to raise extra capital to increase competition within the sector; and introduce a Community Reinvestment Act in the next Parliament to maximise lending to our deprived communities. \nThe paper serves to widen the debate around financial reform and to highlight how regulators need\, in order to restore trust and confidence in the sector\, to go beyond the Banking Reform Act and encourage the financial sector to adopt its civic duty within society. \nThe event will commence with a 10-minute keynote speech\, delivered by Cathy Jamieson MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury\, followed by a panel discussion before opening up the discussion to delegates. DESCRIPTION:ResPublica is pleased to announce that its recent report\, Holistic Mission: Social action and the Church of England\, has been scheduled for debate in the House of Lords at 3pm on 21st November 2013. \nThe motion “to move that this House takes note of the July 2013 report of ResPublica ‘Holistic Mission: Social Action and the Church of England’” was proposed by the Bishop of Leicester\, Lord Tim Stevens\, and emerged in a ballot recently. \nThe ResPublica report\, which was launched with the Archbishop of Canterbury\, Lord Justin Welby\, and the Minister for Civil Society\, Nick Hurd MP\, argues that the Church must become an enabling institution focussed on holistic\, interpersonal and local social action. The report demonstrates that the Church has a truly unique place in English society\, and is the key to unlocking a revolution in both voluntary and statutory public service provision.
