DESCRIPTION:The conference on “The Idea of Europe” is organised by the independent journal Telos — a leading publication that brings together intellectuals from around the world\, especially North America and Europe. The conference will take place in L’Aquila\, Italy\, on 5-8 September 2014. \nAmid the war in eastern Ukraine and growing uncertainty within the EU\, the question of Europe has once again come to the fore. Since 1945\, integration has retrieved and extended the ancient Carolingian unity of France and Germany in the west of Europe. But successive waves of EU enlargement have failed to restore and renew the Constantinian vision of a pan-European polity that includes Russia\, Ukraine and Turkey — former empires that emerged from Byzantium and that view themselves as European powers. \nHow can we rethink relations across Europe and also between Europe\, the rest of the West and the wider world? Can we speak of a global Europe without a leading role for Britain and Russia — however unlikely such a scenario currently may be? \nSuch and similar questions will be addressed in the form of plenary panel debates and individual presentations. DESCRIPTION:THE ISSUE:\nThe North’s major cities have enjoyed an incredible renaissance during the past decade\, and despite the challenging economic environment of recent years\, they continue to make huge progress. \nDespite all the progress made\, the investment won\, and the impressive physical regeneration that has taken place\, there still remains a chasm between prosperity in the North and the South of England. \nThe BBC programme hosted by Evan Davis recently ‘Mind the Gap’ confirmed that London is creating a fifth of Britain’s income and is pulling away from the rest of the country. What can be done to begin to redress the balance? \nTHE EVENT:\nFollowing the success of last year’s inaugural Northern Revolution conference at Media City\, which attracted a huge amount of interest and media coverage\, Downtown is continuing this important debate and discussion. \nWith ‘the age of austerity’ likely to go on for some time\, public finances tight\, and no end in sight to Westminster’s unhealthy obsession with London\, what can Northern cities do to build on the relative success they have enjoyed\, and accelerate transformation and economic growth? \nWould a ‘super city’ of the north be a possible answer? Should we simply allow London to continue its growth and find faster ways of getting in and out of the capital? Does the North need a Boris? \nThe Northern Revolution 2 is a half day conference that will bring together leading decision makers\, academics and entrepreneurs to discuss and debate these fascinating questions – and more importantly give you an opportunity to contribute to a debate that is likely to be central to business and political discussion in the run up to the next election. \nTHE AGENDA:\nConnecting the cities of the North- Could it work? Sir Howard Bernstein talks to Michael Taylor about the possibility of creating a Northern ‘super city’. Wales has an independent Assembly\, whilst Scotland is looking to detach itself from the UK altogether in a referendum later this year. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 30th June\, ResPublica will be hosting Rt Hon Greg Barker MP\, Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change\, who will be delivering a keynote speech on how the gas revolution can help put the UK on track to the low carbon future that we desperately need. \nIn the context of global climate emissions and with next year’s UN climate talks in Paris just around the corner\, political leaders both domestically and internationally are identifying how to act to combat climate change. The Minister will address the potential role of both conventional and unconventional gas in helping to reduce global emissions. \nWe would be delighted if you could join us for this event\, which will include an expert panel discussion with Dan Byles MP\, Chair of the APPG on Unconventional Oil & Gas\, preceding the keynote address. Following this will be a Q&A session with the Minister and the panel.
