SUMMARY:Launch of ResPublica and Core Cities Report at The UK Devolution Summit
DESCRIPTION:View the agenda \nThe debate on devolution\, not only between parliaments\, but for cities and other places across the whole of the UK\, has never been more important to the future of our country. \nAs the General Election approaches\, all major parties have committed to devolution in some form and it will be a key issue in manifestos. Coming so soon after the Smith Commission on devolution to Scotland\, the Summit\, fronted by high profile speakers and delegates\, is a chance to shape the debate. \nThe event will see the launch of a new report from ResPublica\, Restoring Britain’s City States: Devolution\, public service reform and local economic growth\, as part of a major initiative to advance devolution across the UK. \nExamining the key findings of that report\, this Summit will ask how devolution can deliver a more robust\, rebalanced economy for the whole of the UK\, and how it might also be used to drive growth\, create jobs\, and radically transform public services. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\n\nSir Richard Leese\, Leader\, Manchester City Council; Chair\, Core Cities Group \n\n\nPhillip Blond\, Director\, ResPublica \n\n\nBen Page\, Chief Executive\, Ipsos MORI \n\n\nLord Haughey \n\n\nCllr Gordon Matheson\, Leader of Glasgow City Council \n\n\nProfessor Lesley Sawers\, Pro-Vice Chancellor\, Glasgow Caledonian University \n\n\n\n\nJim Murphy MP\, Scottish Labour Leader \n\n\nProfessor Michael Parkinson\, University of Liverpool \n\n\nCllr Nick Forbes\, Leader\, Newcastle City Council \n\n\nSir Howard Bernstein\, Chief Executive\, Manchester City Council \n\n\nCouncillor Jon Collins\, Leader\, Nottingham City Council \n\n\n  \nThe Summit builds on several recent reports recommending more devolution to cities and other places\, and several ‘Devolution Deals’\, including that for Greater Manchester which will be set out in detail\, asking where next and how other places can benefit.

SUMMARY:Markets\, Monopolies\, and Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Blond\, Aditya Chakrabortty\, Adam Cohen. Isabel Hilton hosts. \nThe internet has democratised knowledge and transformed our lives. But from Microsoft to Apple\, its monopolies are rampant. \nShould we break up the corporations and\, like China\, build firewalls to keep them out? Would this nurture local economies or threaten the prosperity of the West? \nGuardian economist Aditya Chakrabortty\, Google’s Head of Competition Policy for Europe Adam Cohen\, and ResPublica Director Phillip Blond contemplate digital monopoly.

SUMMARY:Conference on Post-liberal Politics – Concepts and Ideas
DESCRIPTION:The focus will be on critique of economic and social liberalism and on alternatives that are fundamentally different from the anti-liberal ideas of populists on the extreme right such as UKIP or the Front National. \nDavid Lammy MP will be the keynote speaker on Monday 23rd June 2014 at 10.30am\, followed by a panel discussion. \nOther confirmed speakers include:\n\nDr Albena Azmanova\, BSIS\nPhillip Blond\, ResPublica\nJohn Gaffney\, Aston\nLord Glasman\, Labour\nDavid Goodhart\, Demos\nDr Chris Holmes\, Warwick\nDr Amarjit Lahel\, Aston\nProf. John Milbank\, Nottingham\nDr Jon Wilson\, KCL\n\nConference material\, a light lunch and coffee will be provided. \nWhy Post-Liberalism?\nThe financial crisis since 2008 and various riots since the early 2000s have called into the question the liberal consensus that defines the centre-ground of British and European politics. Liberalisation seems to have maximised the freedoms and opportunities of the few while leading to greater inequality\, poverty\, exclusion\, discrimination and social fragmentation for the many. However\, critiques of liberalism and alternatives to liberal politics are coming to the fore. \nThe aim of the conference is to examine the post-liberal critiques of liberalism and explore some of the key concepts of post-liberalism\, notably reciprocity\, mutuality\, virtue and vocation. By combining some lectures and short presentations with long panel discussions\, the aim of the conference is to have a lively exchange of ideas and a robust debate about post-liberal politics.

SUMMARY:4000%: Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest?
DESCRIPTION:4000% Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest? #PaydayLoansFringe. \nOn the back of a recent Office for Fair Trading report on payday loans; the short-term lending sector has come under increased criticism and scrutiny. With some payday lenders exhibiting unethical and unscrupulous behaviour\, it is unclear whether payday lending functions as a crucial form of finance for those on low incomes\, or simply a means of locking the poor into a cycle of debt. With the demand for payday loans apparent\, trust needs to be reinjected into the sector with clear regulations\, ethical practices and clear accountability. \nSpeakers:\n\nRobin Walker MP\, Business\, Innovation & Skill Committee\nJoanna Elson\, Chief Executive\, Money Advice Trust @Money_Advice\nRussell Hamblin-Boone\, Chief Executive\, Consumer Finance Association @CFA_pressoffice\nJulian Knight\, Money and Property Editor\, Independent on Sunday (Chair) @ukmoneyguru\n\nCo-hosted with Consumer Finance Association.

SUMMARY:Climbing the Credit Ladder: Short-term loans as a path to long-term credit
DESCRIPTION:In light of the recent regulation and reform from the Financial Conduct Authority on short-term credit supply\, ResPublica is launching its latest report: Climbing the Credit Ladder: Short-term loans as a path to long-term credit. The report will explore the current state of a market that has undergone dramatic change within the last year\, and will chart a new way forward for policy-makers and the sector itself. \nIt will examine ways in which the short-term finance sector can become a source of social good\, helping consumers ‘climb the credit ladder’ through integration of the sector with the consumer credit market more widely\, and show how these firms can also be part of effectively supporting those who fall into unsustainable debt. \nThe launch event will feature a panel address\, discussion and Q&A session. \nMembers of the panel include:\n\nCathy Jamieson MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nMark Garnier MP\, Member\, Treasury Select Committee and Vice-Chair\, APPG on Financial Education for Young People\nRussell Hamblin-Boone\, Chief Executive\, Consumer Finance Association\nDr John Gathergood\, author of the report and Associate Professor in Economics\, University of Nottingham\n\nSpaces will be strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis. Please register for your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. \nPlease arrive promptly for a 2pm start. We look forward to seeing you there.
