SUMMARY:A Community Right to Beauty
DESCRIPTION:ResPublica is launching its latest report: A Community Right to Beauty: Giving communities the power to shape\, enhance and create beautiful places\, buildings and spaces. Arguing for the restoration and democratisation beauty in public policy\, this seminal publication recommends the extension of community influence in the planning process to ensure beautiful localities are accessible to all. \nBased on findings from a public poll conducted by leading pollsters Ipsos Mori\, the report explores the public’s attitudes towards beauty and perceived local access to beautiful spaces. \nBeauty plays a central role in enabling people and communities to flourish. Our report highlights the health\, economic\, social and civic benefits of living near beautiful surroundings\, and reasserts the importance of its intrinsic value. \nOur report argues for a ‘community right to beauty’ to be introduced via primary legislation\, the details of which will be revealed in the report. The policy recommendations set out a range of new powers and incentives to support the democratic discernment of what makes a neighbourhood beautiful\, and communities’ ability to independently create\, shape and improve their locale. \nAfter opening remarks by ResPublica’s Head of Policy Programmes\, Caroline Julian\, the event will feature a panel discussion\, with the following confirmed speakers: \n\nRt Hon Nick Herbert MP\, former Conservative Minister\nLoyd Grossman\, Chairman of the Heritage Alliance\nDame Fiona Reynolds\, former Chair of the National Trust.\nSir Terry Farrell\, Chair of the Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment\nPhillip Blond\, Director\, ResPublica\n\nJoining us will be a diverse range of senior representatives from across national and local government\, civil society\, the media and leading charities and businesses.. Spaces will be strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come\, first serve basis. Please register for your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:In Professions We Trust
DESCRIPTION:ResPublica invites to you the launch of its latest report: In Professions We Trust: Fostering virtuous practitioners in teaching\, law and medicine. This report will argue that the legal\, medical\, and teaching professions provide a vital link between public service and the wider common good. Yet this understanding of civic purpose is in crisis\, and the professions too often have come to be seen as self-serving interest groups. The conception of professionalism founded on the performance of duties has been eroded\, with transactionality\, narrowing specialisation\, and the meeting of imposed targets coming to characterise practice. The resultant loss of trust has been detrimental to both practitioners and users of services. \nWe need to acknowledge the obligation of practitioners to serve the common good in order to return law\, medicine\, and teaching to their proper status as vocations. This entails calling practitioners to reconsider their sense of professional purpose\, and allowing the rebuilding of relationships\, in which the doctor\, teacher\, and lawyer knows and seeks to serve all the needs of their patient\, student\, or client. Through this restoration of trust\, it will be possible to return responsibility to members of the professions. \nThis report reasserts virtue as the hallmark of the professions and their practitioners. The continuous nature of the practice of virtue at every stage of professional life must be grasped\, embedding a consideration of practical wisdom and reflective practice in both training and professional life. In this way\, the professions will once again fulfil their calling as vocations that serve the good of all. \nThe event will feature remarks from Dr Dan Poulter\, Conservative MP\, and a  senior Labour counterpart followed by a panel session including \n\nPatrick Roach\, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT\nFrancis Gilbert\, Teacher and author\nLord Phillips of Sudbury\, former member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Legal Aid\nPhillip Blond\, Director of ResPublica\n\nThe launch will be a private event\, to which we will be inviting high level representatives from the medical\, teaching and legal professions\, Parliament\, and the media. Spaces will be strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come\, first serve basis. Please register for your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. \nPlease arrive promptly for a 1:30 pm start. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nThis project is kindly supported by: \n

SUMMARY:Building for the Future: What now for housing?
DESCRIPTION:Keynotes – \nRoberta Blackman-Woods MP\, Shadow Housing Minister \nClive Betts MP \nSpeakers –  \nSara Bailey\, Head of Residential Real Estate\, Trowers & Hamlins\nDavid Cowans\, Chief Executive\, Places for People\nJeremy Stibbe\, Executive Director Development & Sales\, Peabody\nStephen Teagle\, MD Affordable Housing & Regeneration\, Galliford Try \nChaired by: Phillip Blond\, Director\, ResPublica \nWith the General Election over and Ministerial positions finalised\, the Government must now turn its attention to implementing its manifesto and address the nation’s deep social and economic issues\, the most pressing of which is housing. The failure to adequately plan for the future has plunged the UK into a supply and affordability crisis that affects people across the nation. At one end\, there is an ever growing group who cannot access social housing and are locked out of home ownership\, and at the other\, for those in housing\, the combination of a rise in property prices\, constrained mortgage availability and a slow recovery from the recession has drastically changed the market. Furthermore\, the separation between homeowners and private renters is a rising source of tension\, entrenching wealth inequality and feeding an intergenerational divide. \nAs a basic social need\, our citizens should have access to affordable and high quality housing in an attractive neighbourhood that has the necessary infrastructure for them to flourish. A steady home in a well-designed community can have an enormous impact on individual and family life\, providing the necessary stability for a job\, a good base for education as well as delivering essential health\, well-being and wider community benefits. With housing so entwined with our lives\, in the long-run everybody loses from what is rightly labeled a crisis. \nTo discuss the direction of housing post-election\, we’re delighted to welcome range of speakers to explore how we can build for the future. \nThis event will coincide with the launch of our latest paper Local Place Partnerships\, which will put forward the case for institutional change and propose a new body that can enable local authorities to coordinate housebuilding and create thriving communities. \nTo attend this event\, please register via the event page. \ndavid.fagleman@respublica.org.uk  or 0203 543 8148. \n  \nKindly supported by: \n       \n

SUMMARY:21st Century Healthcare: Technology\, participation and medical innovation\, with George Freeman MP\, Minister for Life Sciences
DESCRIPTION:‘21st Century Healthcare: Technology\, participation and medical innovation’ will be a UK first\, bringing together the key stakeholders from across the industry to form a holistic pathway for the life sciences industry. The day will set the standard for the Government’s Life Sciences Strategy for the next five years in supporting a model of healthcare fit for the 21st century. \nThe Minister for Life Sciences\, George Freeman MP\, will be among the audience throughout the day providing a unique opportunity to engage with the Government’s agenda and enabling a two-way dialogue on the most pressing issues confronting the industry. Kindly hosted by Google Campus\, the conference will provide a platform for collaboration in thought leadership\, inviting the leading innovative figures from the sector to share their expertise and discuss solutions in a constructive environment. \nThe nature of the health problems we encounter and how we address them is changing. Lifestyle choices are constantly evolving\, people are living for longer and chronic conditions such as diabetes\, obesity and dementia are getting worse. Traditional responses to the country’s growing needs are becoming outdated\, and we need to develop a model which both capitalises on our historic strengths in life sciences and enables a rapid response to the health challenges we face. \nThe UK’s life sciences industry has been one of the most successful globally. We have a strong history of discovery and medical advances\, and our digital and healthcare technologies have demonstrated our ability to innovate. We now need to harness the success of our emerging innovations more effectively\, as well as our world-class science and clinical research. Twenty-first century healthcare and medical research will need to be far more centred on patients and the clinical infrastructure of tissues and data. We need to bolster the vital role of the patient\, the entrepreneur and the community\, alongside local supply chains\, institutions and small businesses\, to enable greater participation and ‘bottom-up’ innovation. We need to create a healthcare model fit for the 21st century. \nTthe conference will draw together speakers and delegates from across the political spectrum\, life sciences industry and civil service to explore and set the high level outcomes for patients that this country needs to achieve and the means by which we can meet such goals. \n\nThroughout the day\, guests will reflect on the Government’s Life Sciences Strategy and through a series of workshops\, will map the ‘way ahead’ for public policy for the next five to ten years. The Minister will join us as both a speaker and a participant for the whole day and will conclude the conference with keynote remarks on where the Government must go from here. \n

SUMMARY:Digital currencies: Will regulation stifle innovation? with Steve Baker MP & Adam Afriyie MP
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the financial crisis\, the world of finance has seen the rapid growth of digital currencies. Offering a payment service that is quick\, cheap and convenient\, their popularity has risen as people look for alternatives to our mainstream financial institutions. As innovative digital currencies have begun to break into the mainstream monetary system\, the question of regulation is being debated by policy-makers. The Chancellor recently hailed digital currencies as a way to turn Britain into a ‘global centre of financial innovation’ and\, with the Treasury recently closing a consultation\, the Government has made its intentions clear.\n \nTo debate whether the regulation of digital currencies will stifle innovation\, ResPublica is hosting a pop-up policy event that will hear from Steve Baker MP\, Member of the Treasury Select Committee\, who has called on the government to move away from new regulations for digital currencies\, and from Adam Afriyie MP\, who has made the case for firm but light regulation in order for Britain to lead in the digital currency boom.\n \nResPublica welcomes you to join the debate and discuss what shape\, if any\, a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in Britain should take. If you would like to attend this event\, please sign up via the registration page.\n \nFor more information and the opportunity to partner with ResPublica on this event\, please contact Michaela Costello\, Head of Prosperity Programme michaela.costello@respublica.org.uk or 0207 222 6552

SUMMARY:Launch of ResPublica and Core Cities Report at The UK Devolution Summit
DESCRIPTION:View the agenda \nThe debate on devolution\, not only between parliaments\, but for cities and other places across the whole of the UK\, has never been more important to the future of our country. \nAs the General Election approaches\, all major parties have committed to devolution in some form and it will be a key issue in manifestos. DESCRIPTION:Phillip Blond\, Aditya Chakrabortty\, Adam Cohen. Isabel Hilton hosts. \nThe internet has democratised knowledge and transformed our lives. SUMMARY:Conference on Post-liberal Politics – Concepts and Ideas
DESCRIPTION:The focus will be on critique of economic and social liberalism and on alternatives that are fundamentally different from the anti-liberal ideas of populists on the extreme right such as UKIP or the Front National. \nDavid Lammy MP will be the keynote speaker on Monday 23rd June 2014 at 10.30am\, followed by a panel discussion. \nOther confirmed speakers include:\n\nDr Albena Azmanova\, BSIS\nPhillip Blond\, ResPublica\nJohn Gaffney\, Aston\nLord Glasman\, Labour\nDavid Goodhart\, Demos\nDr Chris Holmes\, Warwick\nDr Amarjit Lahel\, Aston\nProf. John Milbank\, Nottingham\nDr Jon Wilson\, KCL\n\nConference material\, a light lunch and coffee will be provided. \nWhy Post-Liberalism?\nThe financial crisis since 2008 and various riots since the early 2000s have called into the question the liberal consensus that defines the centre-ground of British and European politics. Liberalisation seems to have maximised the freedoms and opportunities of the few while leading to greater inequality\, poverty\, exclusion\, discrimination and social fragmentation for the many. However\, critiques of liberalism and alternatives to liberal politics are coming to the fore. \nThe aim of the conference is to examine the post-liberal critiques of liberalism and explore some of the key concepts of post-liberalism\, notably reciprocity\, mutuality\, virtue and vocation. By combining some lectures and short presentations with long panel discussions\, the aim of the conference is to have a lively exchange of ideas and a robust debate about post-liberal politics.

SUMMARY:4000%: Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest?
DESCRIPTION:4000% Are payday loans ever in the consumer interest? #PaydayLoansFringe. \nOn the back of a recent Office for Fair Trading report on payday loans; the short-term lending sector has come under increased criticism and scrutiny. With some payday lenders exhibiting unethical and unscrupulous behaviour\, it is unclear whether payday lending functions as a crucial form of finance for those on low incomes\, or simply a means of locking the poor into a cycle of debt. With the demand for payday loans apparent\, trust needs to be reinjected into the sector with clear regulations\, ethical practices and clear accountability. \nSpeakers:\n\nRobin Walker MP\, Business\, Innovation & Skill Committee\nJoanna Elson\, Chief Executive\, Money Advice Trust @Money_Advice\nRussell Hamblin-Boone\, Chief Executive\, Consumer Finance Association @CFA_pressoffice\nJulian Knight\, Money and Property Editor\, Independent on Sunday (Chair) @ukmoneyguru\n\nCo-hosted with Consumer Finance Association.
