Military Academies: New Institutions to Foster Social Mobility

A public debate in a series of sessions exploring the theme of military academies

Following the acclaimed ResPublica publicationMilitary  Academies: Tackling disadvantage, improving ethos and changing outcome, we hosted a public panel discussion that addressed new approaches to tackling intergenerational disadvantage and socio-educational dysfunction that cripples our most depressed areas. As we suggested in the paper, we have lost from our most disadvantaged areas the foundational moral institutions that can build the resilience, discipline and confidence that our children need.

To reverse this damaging trend, we proposed a new network of transformative educational institutions of Military Academies, officially backed by the Armed Services and delivered by the Cadet Associations which would teach the skills and discipline required to alter outcomes for those who live in our most troubled towns and cities. The event featured a panel who explored the assumption underlying this proposal as well as the best ways of implementing this idea.

Speakers included:
  • Andrew Bridgen MP, Member of the Regulatory Reform Select Committee (confirmed)
  • Phillip Blond, Director, ResPublica and co-author of  Military Academies: Tackling disadvantage, improving ethos and changing outcome (confirmed)
  • Julian Brazier MP, Conservative MP for Canterbury (confirmed)
  • Joel Shenton, Editor, DefenceMagazine.com
The event was held on Thursday 11th September 2012 at 6pm, in the MacMillan Room, Portcullis House, 1 Bridget Street, Westminster, London.

As an independent, non-partisan think tank with an ongoing interest in re-shaping the architecture of our public services and empowering our communities, ResPublica will provide a platform for this stimulating and in depth discussion. This event will emerge as output from our Models and Partnerships for Social Prosperity workstream, one of the three core workstreams of the ResPublica Trust.

In some ways I am disturbed about the emphasis on "military" being placed on the aims to emprove Social Mobility as it suggests that ones lack of Social Mobility is simply down a aggressively disruptive nature, rather than a more typical reason of bei
