In the Service of Youth: What next after the riots?

ResPublica fringe event at Conservative Conference 2011

Co-hosted with Youth Zone, NCVYS and NYA.

How do all sections of society support communities? How do we support young people, especially in times of economic chaos?  Community-based youth work has a critical role to play in this and it is fundamental for communities to involve young people. This event will look at issues around unemployment, poverty and community engagement in considering youth in society.

  • Fiona Blacke, Chief Executive, National Youth Agency
  • Susanne Rauprich, Chief Executive, National Council for Voluntary Youth Services
  • Ben Howlett, Chair of Conservative Future
  • Phillip Blond, Director, ResPublica

Refreshments will be served.

All ResPublica events will be held in the ResPublica Marquee, an exclusive space outside Manchester Central’s Charter Foyer (marked ENT 1 on the handbook map).  This venue is inside the conference secure zone and attendees will need to be security accredited.  For further details please see the Conservative Party website.

The last 12 months have been defined by public sector spending cuts and increased demands on charity services. Many organisations have experienced unprecedented reductions in council funding this year, forcing them to squeeze or shut services. Citizens Diablo 3 Advice, for example, has just reported funding cuts as high as 60% in some of its bureaux, which translated into 780,000 fewer people receiving advice on issues such as debt and employment between April and July 2011.

I think that young people deserves to be integrated too in the systems, no matter if the things in the economy are going in a bad or in a good direction.
