So ResRepublica has to think its way to the conclusions green thinkers arrived at decades ago. Great. What is needed is action, not ever more conferences, papers, committees, books, reports and waffle. If you want to know what the threats are and the only solutions, ask someone who has been thinking/acting/arguing/campaigning on this issue for over thirty years, not those who are only now starting to think.
Politicians en masse don"t have a clue, they act on certain principles; a) will it harm my chances of re-election to this plum, well-paid job, b) will it earn me brownie points with my leader, c) can I turn it to my advantage.
I have yet to hear a politician from any party who impresses with their understanding of environmental threats, principally climate change. None appear to realise it isn"t going to get tough in the far distant future - children"s children"s children is a popular phrase - but in their children"s lifetime if not their own. The lack of awareness and determination to act is depressing and dispiriting, the European political class as a whole is an abject failure at addressing this issue, and the UK is worse than most.
That people who still cling to the belief that capitalism is the only social system and that it can solve the current environment problems, illustrates their total lack of understanding of both the causes and solution. This conference will therefore be a waste of time and money.

Fiddling while Earth burns.
