Date: Tuesday 4th October 2011
Time: 5.00pm
Co-hosted with International Alert (corresponding events at Labour conference)
The recent riots and civil
unrest in Britain demonstrate the importance of social cohesion and its
relevance to the ‘Big Society’ narrative of Government. Peacebuilding approaches
have proven to provide a new perspective from which to address deprivation,
cuts to services and issues surrounding migration and gang crimein the UK. In
areas such as Stockwell, Bristol, Sheffield, Burnley, Bradford, and
Preston, local organisationswork on different aspects of community cohesion and
good relations to combat issues such as gang rivalry, youth crime and political
extremism.
Panellists
are asked to consider whether feelings ofno sense of belonging or identity are
the reason behind civil unrest in the UK?What isthe role ofindividual and
parental responsibility towards anti-social behaviour andyouthcrime? How can
the most marginalised and vulnerable communities re-connect again with policy
makers and government? Which approaches should be adopted?
